Happy New Year! I hope all of our readers are doing well and had a great holiday! We hope 2023 will be a bit less difficult (on many levels) than the tumultuous year we are kissing goodbye. Not many events to report on this week, but things look like they will be picking up mid-January. One note of caution, several of the events we list this week are indoor events with lots of people. The "tri-demic" seems to be getting worse (even super-cautious me got Covid last week, which made for a rather unusual Christmas). So take all reasonable efforts to protect yourself, the people you love, and total strangers you might encounter! Starting things off, there will be a Bollywood-style New Year's Eve Party Saturday night in Mira Mesa. Tuesday, Ain't Too Proud - The Life and Times of the Temptations opens at the Civic Theatre. For many of us the Temps were/are part of the soundtrack of our lives. Next Thursday, the three-day SoundON Festival gets underway at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla. The festival will feature Southern California and Arizona-based composers, including some former residents and recent arrivals, among them Christopher Adler, Katherine Balch, Adam Borecki, Franklin Cox, Adam Greene, Kay He, Texu Kim, and Philippe Manoury. Inventing El Barrio at the Sherman Heights Community Center will consist of screenings of 3 short documentaries that "reveal inspiring solutions and journeys to minimize industry in the area and create a less polluted community." Warwick's will host author Michelle Gable as she discusses and signs her new book, The Lipstick Bureau: A Novel Inspired by True WWII Events. Next Friday, Le Lycée Français de San Diego will screen the French film Confessions with English subtitles. Benise, the "Prince of Spanish Guitar," will perform at the Balboa Theatre. Next Saturday at Border X Brew Pub, a Juan Gabriel Tribute Celebration will honor with music and spirits late great Mexican singer, songwriter and actor. There will be a Celebration of Ireland Concert at the International Cottages in Balboa Park featuring "traditional toe-tapping tunes, songs in Gaelic and English, folklore, history and Irish poetry." Should be good craic indeed! Capping off next Saturday, there will be a Salsa & Bachata New Years Party at the resplendent Tango del Rey. Next Sunday the La Jolla Women's Club will host Le Salon De Musiques: Franz Schubert which they promise will be "a concert experience unlike any other."
Everyone here at the San Diego Participant Observer and the Worldview Project wish you fulfilling, illuminating, and culturally-rich experiences in the days ahead. See you in 2023!
